ViscoSoft Select vs TEMPUR-Adapt Topper

A high-density memory foam topper against the premium TEMPUR one. Both soften a too-firm bed; only one of them is worth three times the money, and only for a particular sleeper.

By Stephen V.Last updated How we choose

Both of these are three-inch memory-foam toppers with CertiPUR-US certified foam, and both do the same job: they put a cushioning layer between you and a mattress that is too firm at the shoulder and hip. Neither adds support, and neither will do anything useful for a bed that sags — that is a different product and a different page.

What separates them is material and price, and the price gap is large enough that it deserves a straight answer rather than a diplomatic one. Our view: the TEMPUR-Adapt is a genuinely distinctive product that a minority of sleepers specifically want, and for everyone else the ViscoSoft does the same job for a fraction of the money. Below is our read of both published specifications — we own neither topper and have slept on neither.

#1Better value, and the right choice for most people

ViscoSoft 3" Select High Density Memory Foam Topper

The topper to buy when your mattress is too firm and your shoulder or hip is taking the hit. High-density foam means it cushions without bottoming out, and at 3 inches it changes the feel of the bed meaningfully rather than just adding a thin pad.

Certifications the maker states

Strengths

  • High-density foam resists bottoming out better than cheap toppers
  • 3 inches is enough to genuinely change a too-firm bed's feel
  • CertiPUR-US certified foam named by the maker

Trade-offs

  • Adds softness, not support — it won't fix a mattress that's too soft for your back
  • Memory foam sleeps warm; the cover helps but doesn't eliminate it
TypeHigh-density memory foam
EffectAdds plush cushioning (softens the bed)
Thickness3"
Best forSide, Combination

Construction. Ventilated high-density memory foam with a removable cover. ViscoSoft lists the foam as CertiPUR-US certified. A topper has no fire barrier, so the fiberglass question that applies to whole mattresses does not arise here.

#2Better if you specifically want the TEMPUR feel

TEMPUR-Pedic TEMPUR-Adapt 3" Topper

Trade-offs

  • By far the most expensive topper here
  • The slow-sink feel isn't for everyone, and it sleeps warm

The short answer

Buy the ViscoSoftunless you have slept on a TEMPUR mattress and know you want that feel. It is high-density foam, three inches thick, certified, and it changes a too-firm bed meaningfully. For the overwhelming majority of people whose complaint is “my shoulder hurts on this mattress”, that is the entire solution.

Buy the TEMPUR-Adaptif you have owned TEMPUR before and miss it, or if you have tried a conventional memory-foam topper and found it too responsive — too quick to push back. TEMPUR material has a slow, dense, sinking response that is genuinely different from generic memory foam, and people who want it do not find it elsewhere.

Is TEMPUR material actually different?

Yes, and we would rather say so than pretend the premium is pure branding. TEMPUR material is denser and slower to respond than standard memory foam. Press it and it yields gradually rather than compressing at once; get up and it recovers slowly rather than springing back. That produces a distinctive cradled sensation where the foam feels like it is closing around you rather than being pushed out of the way.

Whether that is worth paying for depends entirely on whether you like it, and opinion is genuinely divided. Some people find it the most comfortable surface they have slept on. Others find the slow response makes turning over feel like work, which matters if you change position frequently in the night. If you have never slept on TEMPUR, you are making an expensive bet on a feel you have not experienced — and unlike a mattress, a topper rarely comes with a trial that lets you find out.

Density, and what it protects you from

The failure mode of a cheap topper is bottoming out: under the heaviest part of you, the foam compresses all the way and you end up feeling the mattress through it. When that happens the topper has stopped working precisely where you needed it to work.

Density is what prevents it, and both of these are dense products — that is what ViscoSoft's “high density” naming refers to, and density is the defining property of TEMPUR material. Neither publishes a density figure in pounds per cubic foot, so we cannot rank them numerically and will not invent numbers to do so. What we can say is that both are built to resist the failure that makes budget toppers disappointing, which is the main reason we cover these two rather than the cheapest options available.

Heat

Both sleep warm, and anyone telling you otherwise about a three-inch memory-foam layer is selling something. Dense foam retains heat and putting three inches of it directly under your body increases contact area, which is exactly the mechanism that traps warmth.

The ViscoSoft is ventilated and has a removable cover; the TEMPUR-Adapt has a washable cover. Neither claim eliminates the issue. If you already sleep hot, this is the strongest argument for the latex option on our firm topper page, which breathes considerably better than either of these — though it does a different job, so only consider it if support rather than cushioning is what you actually need.

Neither one fixes a sag

The single most important thing on this page, and it applies to both picks equally. A topper is a surface layer. Laid over a mattress with a dip in it, it conforms to the dip and you keep sleeping in a hollow — now with a soft layer on top making the hips settle further still.

Take two minutes before buying either: strip the bed, crouch until your eye is level with the mattress surface, and look along its length for a hollow where you sleep. Our mattress-versus-topper guide walks through that check and two others, and how to fix a sagging mattress covers what to do if you find one, including the cases where the base rather than the bed is at fault.

A note on certifications

Both list CertiPUR-US certified foam, which tests flexible polyurethane foam for restricted substances, low VOC emissions and restricted flame retardants. Worth noting something that works in a topper's favor: the fiberglass question that dominates mattress shopping does not arise here at all. Fiberglass appears in mattresses as a fire barrier, and a topper has no fire barrier, because it is not a mattress. That is one of the few genuinely simplifying facts in this category, and our non-toxic toppers page explains it in full. The certification decoder covers what CertiPUR-US does and does not audit.

If neither is right

If your budget will not stretch to the ViscoSoft, the LUCID gel topper is the cheapest certified way to find out whether a topper helps your back before you spend more — less dense, shorter-lived, but a legitimate test. If your bed needs real loft rather than a surface change, the four-inch Sleep Innovations is the one built for that. Our main topper roundup puts all of them side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Is the TEMPUR-Adapt topper worth the extra money?

Only if you specifically want the TEMPUR feel — a dense, slow-responding material that cradles rather than pushes back. If you have owned TEMPUR before and miss it, the premium buys something you cannot get elsewhere. If you simply want a too-firm bed to feel softer, the ViscoSoft does that job for a fraction of the price.

What is the difference between TEMPUR material and memory foam?

TEMPUR material is denser and slower to respond. Conventional memory foam compresses relatively quickly and recovers relatively quickly; TEMPUR yields gradually and recovers gradually. The result is a distinctive cradled feel that some people love and others find makes turning over feel like work.

Do memory foam toppers sleep hot?

Yes, both of these will. Dense foam retains heat and a three-inch layer directly under your body increases contact area, which is the mechanism that traps it. Ventilation and washable covers reduce the effect rather than removing it. Latex breathes considerably better if heat is your main concern.

Will either topper fix a sagging mattress?

No. A topper is a surface layer and conforms to whatever is underneath it, so laid over a dip it follows the dip. Check first: strip the bed, crouch until your eye is level with the surface, and look along its length for a hollow where you sleep.

Do mattress toppers contain fiberglass?

No, and this is one of the few genuinely simple answers in the category. Fiberglass appears in mattresses as a fire barrier, and a topper does not have one because it is not a mattress. Both toppers here name CertiPUR-US certified foam, which covers the foam's chemistry and emissions.
